India is a diverse land and is dotted with numerous villages. Villages in India are free from the hustle and fast life of cities. Villages in India have a long history of rich culture, heritage and traditions. Indian art is celebrated in India with traditional dance forms, songs and the list goes on. However, life in villages is not a bed of roses. Villages are the seat of farming and agriculture in the country with numerous farmers finding their only occupation in agriculture. Many villages in India do not have access to advanced infrastructure and machines and mostly depend on manual labour for their work. Electricity supply and internet connectivity are still lacking in villages. Villages deal with the rising cost of living along with crop failures. Taking all these into account, the question arises if villages in India are a part of the country’s strengths or weaknesses.
Indian Villages – The strength of India
Villages are self-sufficient units of the country. They are the backbone of the country where most of the food production takes place in India. Moreover, the villages maintain the ecological balance of the country. With the rapidly advancing cities, villages are a hub of pure and fresh nature. The eco-friendly habits keep them comparatively pollution free.
The Indian economy is vastly dependent on India’s agricultural sector along with fisheries and forestry. Furthermore, villages still promote the culture and traditions of India with their dances, songs, handicrafts and festivals that are forgotten in the urban areas.
Weaker aspects of Villages
With the rapid urbanization, the villages in India are left out in India. As a result, the villages lag in literacy rates and suffer from high levels of poverty. Villages have reduced access to basic amenities including proper water facilities, education and transportation. Lower rates of literacy lead to an excessive increase in population along with high infant mortality rates.
The government has been spending awareness, setting up educational institutions and providing the villages with basic amenities to eradicate the drawbacks of villages.
