After 13 years, the worldwide rating agency Moody’s Investor Services altered the outlook for India’s government debt. It was placed from stable to positive. This will lower the cost of borrowing from foreign sources and enhance in-country investments. Hence, this upgrade will strengthen the Indian economy.

Again, in its analysis, Moody’s stated that the rating might also come under pressure to fall. The condition of the banking sector might dramatically worsen or external vulnerability sharply rise. This raises the issue of maintaining Indian fiscal metrics to prevent a downgrading.

What were the main grounds for the upgrade?

The agency’s decision was supported by the optimistic view of institutional and economic changes. This will provide opportunities for rapid growth and reduce public debt.

According to the research, economic changes like the Direct Benefit Transfer, Aadhaar, demonetization, and the GST will improve the business climate by lowering casualness.  Hence, it will promote long-term economic growth.

Furthermore, the report says that the regulatory changes would boost confidence. The high level of public debt will eventually drop and remain stable even in the face of shocks.
