The Indian Air Force is continuing its relief efforts in flood-affected areas.
Regardless of these, this year the cloudburst seems to have arrived earlier than expected. But what is the reason behind this?
Why do Floods In Assam 2022 Devastate Every Year?
The flood-prone areas of Assam are wrecked by floods every year. This pertains to varied reasons.
Along with heavy rainfall, Assam also receives river water from Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. The Brahmaputra causes heavy bank erosion which causes water to overflow in the low lying areas. Most of the tributaries of Brahmaputra cause high magnitude flash floods in Assam; along with the showers sum up to the yearly ruining floods in Assam.
Is There A Solution To This Recurring Calamity?
- Building dams for flood water regulation has not been very successful in these low lying areas. As the slow release of water is also beyond the capability; of downstream channels due to the huge volume of water.
- Building embankments on river banks serve as a temporary and short term solution but comes with its drawbacks.
- Another suggested measure from the government was digging up the river bed to make it deeper. Which went against the experts who opposed it because the Brahmaputra river bed is highly rich and yielding.
- The government must not think of ways only when the flood strikes in Assam. It must try to set up a proper river basin management programmes; for flood-plain zoning to divide the areas based on flood vulnerability and take action. The government must act throughout the year, to try and eradicate the flood and not just counter the problem.
