Social Taboos In India. A taboo is the denial of an act based on inaccurate convictions. Most of these derive their potencies from spiritual beliefs or cultural practices. Just the resistance against taboos attracts retributions from society.
Social taboos are abundant all over the world, and no nation can advance if its civilization does not challenge and question the taboos. India is one culturally rich country with a lot of heritage. And no surprise, culture comes together with taboos. India is a land where innumerable such social taboos were, and still, some of them are, practised.
Social Taboos In India Are Preventing The India Growth:
Some taboos in India are deep-seated within society and hold the citizens back from a progressive mindset. A major ingredient of existing social taboos is high illiteracy rates in India. Most Indian citizens are racially prejudiced or possess gender bias or religious intolerance, and the ghastliness due to these taboos scales up to communal riots.
Disturbing incidents fill up the country’s newspapers almost every day. People still do not see minorities as equals, and casteism has clogged their thoughts. People still prefer sons over daughters and female infanticide and foeticide rates, though reducing, are still relatively high and existent.
This regressive perspective is ironic as the setting when India’s daughters are fetching glory to their country and families. Moreover, Indian society still doesn’t accept sexual minorities.
What We Have To Do?
Any form of mass initiatives like seminars and increasing awareness will not be able to reduce social taboos. People least try to question what they believe. The realisation should come from within us.
Indian history has witnessed prominent personalities who had once raised their voice again all the existing social taboos which were inhuman and had adverse effects on the minds of individuals. We have to follow their ideals, be inquisitive, and learn to question our beliefs and customs and not just blindly follow them.
Our constitutional objective of equality and fraternity will linger as a dream unless we appropriately admire and cherish our culture and heritage which affirms the equality and involvement of all communities.
