Indian Political Women the political horizon in almost all countries is quite similar. The deep-rooted patriarchy is visible in lesser women participation in politics. There are very few countries which have ever seen a woman head. In this aspect, the oriental world has overwhelmed the occidental culture. The world’s first woman state head was Mrs. Sirimavo Bandernaike from Sri Lanka. After her, Indira Gandhi carried the legacy in India.
Moreover But to date, India has seen only one female Prime Minister. Especially though there have been many women Chief Ministers in many states but their magnitude concerning that of male politicians is far less. Though there are many Indian political women, only few have been able to build greater momentum.
Women
The intrepid Indian women who will be remembered for ages to come are;
- Indira Gandhi – She was India’s first and to date the only female Prime Minister of India. Moreover she is referred to as the ‘Iron Lady’. In her political career spanning several years, she has always been at the zenith of controversies.
- Jayaram Jayalalitha – Also known as ‘Amma’ or ‘Puratchi Thalaivi’ by her followers, this lady won the hearts of millions in Tamil Nadu with her charisma and empathy. Moreover She has empowered women by focusing on entrepreneurship facilities. Her famous ‘Amma Canteen’ scheme rocked among the mass.
- Mayawati – Conferred with an adoring title of ‘Behenji’, Mayawati is the first woman coming from Dalit background to hold the position of Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh. Especially She has been a controversial figure throughout her political journey. Her schemes to empower women are the notable ones.
- Mamata Banerjee – Unlike the above female politicians, she did not have any father-figure in politics. Finally she had to create her space all by herself. In 2021, she defeated the juggernaut of Narendra Modi and stopped BJP from coming to power in West Bengal. This win was a battle of prestige and she made it.
