Sharad Pawar In the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper chamber of parliament, Sharad Pawar leads the NCP delegation. Maha Vikas Aghadi is chaired by him.

Pawar’s NCP and the Congress party agreed to split seats in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Similarly, despite their differences, the BJP and Shiv Sena ran for office under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) banner. Narendra Modi’s BJP won by a large margin in the election. The Congress party won only one seat in Maharashtra’s 48-member legislature, while the NCP won five seats in the state’s western Maharashtra bastion.

Sharad Pawar’s Comments on Ajit Pawar

Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, claimed on Wednesday that if he had sent his party colleague Ajit Pawar to join hands with the BJP to form a government in Maharashtra after the 2019 Assembly elections, the dispensation would have remained in power.

Ajit Pawar had shocked political circles in the state by forming a government with Devendra Fadnavis in late 2019, with the latter serving as Chef Minister, before it was overthrown in just over three days.

“If I would have sent him (Ajit Pawar), then I would have made sure they would have (formed and) continued the government,” Mr Pawar remarked when asked about this at a Marathi daily Loksatta event.

The NCP leader also claimed that the MVA administration, led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, was functioning well, even though he had been sick for the last ten days.

In response to a question about whether he would lead the government after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the former Union minister said he would like to “help and guide the person who will be heading the government” rather than lead it.

He claims that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at rallies and programmes in Uttar Pradesh, where elections are set for early 2022, shows that the ruling party is aware of the situation on the ground.
